KMD GROUP COSTA RICA PROJECT FEATURE: CASA POAS

Situated on the Costa Rican Hillside, this one of a kind cozy industrial inspired home full of a sense of warmth was designed by KMA Design (Costa Rica) for a lovely family whom we cherish!

The building's architectural features blend rustic with contemporary. We were very considerate of the environment and only minor modifications were made to the existing landscape. It was designed by KMA Design to fit the natural topography, thus we enclosed it in the lower terrace of the landscape as we felt this to be best, in order to protect it from the heavy winds that are characteristic of the Poas area.

The home was intentionally designed to be a flexible, low maintenance home that allows the vacationers to focus on relaxing and enjoying the amazing surrounding views of the landscapes. The house was positioned to sit in the lower part of the terrain to protect it from the heavy winds that the area usually receives. The other side of the façade is the one that gets most of the heavy rain due to its direction and so we protected this side of the house from the rain utilizing the same material as used on the roof.  Overhangs were also used to protect users from the rains.

In the interior, the main floor of the house features an open concept kitchen and a cozy living space. Upstairs a large family room is provided on the second floor that is really the perfect place for pajama parties! The glass used in the home is also an important component as it allows for a lot of light to enter the home thus in turn creating high levels of happiness and awareness for the user. Unlike most of the houses in the area where they use very little amount of glass, we managed to work with a design that allowed us to have big windows and a bright interior space. The Glass windows feature a Bioclimatic design used to keep the house warm enough since it is located in an area where the temperature gets quite cold, but window film protection has been used in order for it to not convert it into an “oven”.

At the back of the house there is a double wall/ air chamber that is also used as a storage area since it has a depth of 1.35 meters. This functions as a storage area and climate wise allows the building to avoid humidity that is transferred into the house due to the terrain.

Outdoors there is a huge terrace that allows one to really enjoy the environment and fresh air. The terrace is made of concrete but has been scored to give it the look of a wood deck. There is also a fire-pit and semi circular concrete bench that is perfect for spending evenings beside the fire.

Casa Poas is an incredible vacation home that offers the serenity of the gorgeous Costa Rican Landscape by harmoniously blending in with it. Truly the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing vacation.

Details have not been lost on this home. The tile detail here is a nice addition to the outdoor washing space.

Stunning views overlooking the countryside can be had from the balcony.
